Almost £400 million worth of contracts have been awarded to Scottish firms as a result of a major Royal Navy project in Fife, according to new figures.
An updated list of sub-contracts placed by the aircraft carrier alliance for the Queen Elizabeth Class project at Rosyth was requested from the UK Government by Labour’s shadow Scottish Secretary, Margaret Curran, with the total coming to £398m.
The Courier can reveal that, although the majority of companies come from outside Scotland, the likes of Glenrothes’ Brand Rex Ltd, Dunfermline’s Isleburn Ltd and Rosyth’s Ship Support Services Ltd who were awarded a £105m contract have all benefited.
Ahead of a visit to the Babcock dockyard today, Ms Curran said: “I’m proud that ships like this are still built in Scotland, employing thousands of men and women, and providing a boost for companies across the country.
“The contracts from the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carrier alone have brought over £300m worth of work to businesses across Scotland.”
SNP defence spokesman Angus Robertson said Ms Curran should “apologise for the 5,000 shipbuilding jobs which were lost in Scotland under the last Labour government” during her Fife visit.
