Cupar Community Council has overcome concerns about traffic to give its support to proposals by a national retailer hoping to build a new supermarket in the town.
Aldi Stores Ltd gave a presentation to the community council this week on its application for a new store on the former Martex Cash and Carry site.
The majority of people who visited a public exhibition last year gave the plans a thumbs-up, but objections have been mounting up, with rival store Lidl and Cupar and North Fife Preservation Society among those not happy.
Aldi wants to build a 1,500 sq ft foodstore along with parking for 93 cars. The company says the development would bring with it around 30 jobs.
However, concerns have been raised mainly on the grounds of road safety, with residents fearing it will exacerbate the congestion on South Road.
The entrance and exit to the proposed new store would be at the location of the previous access point for Martex, with a dedicated right hand turn off South Road.
Aldi says this will maintain traffic flow along South Road, which would be widened to some degree .
It’s also hoped to provide pedestrian access to the site from South Road and a new walkway would be created linking the store with Fisher and Donaldson’s bakery.
Stating that its traffic calculations were based on the presumption that Tesco goes ahead with its expansion proposals further along South Road, Aldi said it is proposed that 11 designated parking spaces for immediate residents would be incorporated into the proposed car park.
Fife Council’s north-east Fife planning committee will make a decision later.
