A mother-of-two was jailed for eight months after she was caught trying to sneak drugs into Perth Prison.
Caroline Berry, 40, made a “catastrophically bad decision” to take heroin and cannabis into the maximum security jail while visiting her long-term partner.
Perth Sheriff Court heard Berry had never been in trouble before and had had to arrange care for her teenage children as she faced being jailed herself.
Berry, of Cardenden, admitted being concerned in the supply of heroin and cannabis as well as taking a phone sim card into Perth Prison on October 5 last year.
Depute fiscal Stuart Richardson told the court: “She had turned up at the prison to visit her partner who was in there. A drug dog was being used in searches and she came to their attention.”
Berry immediately produced a clingfilm wrap containing the drugs and phone card.
Solicitor David Bell said: “She has made a catastrophically bad decision. She was in a relationship for many years with someone who was regularly detained in prison.
“She has never been in trouble before this incident. She is going to have to leave her 15-year-old daughter with a friend and her 13-year-old son with his grandparents. She is very concerned about their welfare.
“She fully accepts she had these items. She didn’t know exactly what was in the packages, but she knew it was drugs.”
Sheriff Fiona Tait told Berry: “The difficulty you face is the nature of these offences and the need for the court to present a clear deterrent against people taking drugs into prison.”
Berry was jailed for 240 days.
