Kinghorn lifeboat crew take to the skies

Kinghorn and Queensferry lifeboat crews train with the new S92 search and rescue helicopter.

The crew of the Kinghorn lifeboat have been getting to know their newest colleague the new coastguard rescue helicopter.

The Sikorsky S92 took over search and rescue duties from the iconic Sea King at the turn of the year and is based at Prestwick.

The Kinghorn RNLI volunteers teamed up with their compatriots at Queensferry for a training exercise with the new aircraft on the Forth earlier this week.

After a brief look at the helicopter on the ground, the lifeboat crews were back on the water to take part in winching exercises, similar to those used in actual rescue operations.

Kinghorn lifeboat helmsman Neil Chalmers said: “This was the first time our crews had seen the new helicopter.

“On arrival, crew members were given a ground briefing by the crew, covering aircraft features, winching procedures and escape from the aircraft in the event of a ditching.

“This is important as crewmembers then have a first-hand experience of the helicopter and its features, and it also allows them to prepare and reassure casualties who may be evacuated.

“Following the ground briefing, both Kinghorn and Queensferry crews launched their boats to practice forming beneath the aircraft, an often difficult and potentially hazardous procedure.

“The winch wire was then lowered to the lifeboats.

“The exercise went very well with all crews happy with the day.”
