Fife chip shop owner who dealt drugs ordered to hand over £133,315

A chip shop owner who has served time for dealing drugs has been fined using proceeds of crime legislation.

Sean Murphy, 45, was ordered to hand over £133,315 to the Government following a hearing on Thursday at the High Court in Edinburgh.

The businessman, of Crombie, Fife, was given six months by judge Lord Kinclaven to pay the sum, which will be invested in community initiatives.

He had earlier been jailed for five years and five months at the High Court in Glasgow in July 2013 for being a member of a gang who dealt cannabis.

His sidekick Craig Maxwell, 29, of Dunfermline, was sentenced to two years and five months following his guilty plea to supplying amphetamine.

Mohammed Nurien, 25, of Manchester, was jailed for five years or his part in the group.

Fellow member Kirsty Watson, 24, was a social worker at the same time she was working as a drug dealer and was given four years for her involvement.

The gang were caught after Watson was caught after travelling from Preston to meet up with Murphy and Maxwell at Townhill Country Park in Fife.

A total of 400 bars of cannabis resin with a value of £500,000 were discovered in Watson’s car, while amphetamine worth around £40,000 was also found in Maxwell’s van.

At yesterday’s hearing, Crown lawyers clawed back more than £100,000 from Murphy after his lawyers came to a deal with a prosecutors.
