Police are investigating a report that a pedestrian was struck by a car and possibly injured on the A92 through Fife during the early hours of Friday morning
The A92 was closed northbound between Kirkcaldy and Glenrothes for more than five hours as police carried out a search of the area between Redhouse and Bankhead roundabouts.
The alarm was raised shortly after 3am when a motorist driving north struck what he believes was a person.
He stopped his car in the next layby and discovered damage had been caused to his car.
However, there was no sign of what he had struck.
The motorist phoned the police who closed the road to carry out an investigation.
Searches were made of the embankment, fields and surrounding roadway but nothing was found.
The road was closed until 8.30am with northbound traffic diverted through Thornton resulting in inevitable delays for commuters. Search teams were still in the area at 12pm and the police helicopter had also been involved in the search.
Inspector Derek Paxton said: “Thanks to an excellent public response to media coverage of this matter earlier today, we are now satisfied that a pedestrian was walking on the A92 Northbound between Kirkcaldy and Glenrothes which is known locally as the Thornton Bypass, at about 3am this morning (Friday).
“We believe the pedestrian was struck by the wing mirror of the vehicle involved and it is likely they will have sustained some form of injury.
“The road was closed for several hours this morning to allow a thorough search of the immediate area, but nothing to assist in identifying the pedestrian has so far been found.
“Police Scotland is keen to identify the pedestrian to establish if they need medical attention. Our Search has been expanded to take in fields and open country near the A92 with Police dogs and the Police Helicopter also having been involved”.
