A female university student was sexually assaulted in St Andrews on Thursday evening.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the attack on the 18-year-old, who was able to summon assistance and escaped injury.
The incident took place in North Haugh, near the Gateway building, at about 5.40pm. The young woman was assaulted by a man on the grass near Agnes Blackadder Halls.
Her assailant was described as being tall, of muscular build and wearing dark clothing. He spoke with a foreign accent. He was last seen running off in the direction of Agnes Blackadder Halls.
Police are keen to trace people who were in the area around the time of the incident.
Detective Inspector Nicola Shepherd said: “The incident we are investigating is rare, therefore, when such incidents do take place, thorough inquires are carried out.
“Fortunately the victim was not harmed during this incident and we are actively seeking the person responsible. The victim has indicated that the suspect spoke with a foreign accent but could not be more specific in terms of a possiblecountry of origin.
“We are working closely with staff and students at the university and this will continue as the inquiry progresses and as Police Scotland continue efforts to trace the suspect.
“In the meantime there will be a continued police presence in and around the area of the North Haugh.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.
