Judges searching for Scotland’s best baker were licking their lips as hundreds of cakes, pies, scones and rolls were put on display in the first stage of the competition.
More than 850 sweet and savoury items from 100 bakers were delivered to judges in Dunfermline, and they inspected the look, smell and taste of each entry.
Once the list of top bakers is cut down it goes to a public vote, with customers deciding the best craft baker with three shops or less, the best retail baker with four or more shops, and the best wholesale baker.
McGhee’s Bakery won the overall prize last year, which is run by Scottish Bakers to promote domestic produce.
Gordon McGhee said: “Since winning, our business has gone from strength to strength and we have been able to share our success with all of our customers by continuing to provide the best baked goods day in and day out.
“We wish everyone all the best in this year’s competition.”
TV cake designer Mich Turner is one of the head judges and she will also present the awards at a ceremony in May.
She said: “The judges will have had a hard task today but I have been really impressed with the quality and creativity Scottish bakers are demonstrating and I look forward to being surprised and delighted when I announce the winners in Glasgow.
“The format of the 2016 competition will see a few changes with three top prizes being awarded ahead of the ultimate accolade.”
