A former Arbroath man who became an artist after being made redundant has died suddenly at his Fife home.
He was 63. Alistair Marcol was the first child of Alfred Marcol, an electrician from Poland, and his wife Mabel.
The family lived in Fraserburgh but moved to Arbroath before Mr Marcol reached school age. He attended Ladyloan Primary School and Arbroath High School.
His father died when he was 10 years old. Mr Marcol was school dux, a prefect, and he excelled in maths and physics but his favourite subject was art.
At the age of 12 he won a national art competition when he painted a picture of a steam train.
He went on to study architecture at Robert Gordon’s College in Aberdeen, then worked at Jenners in Edinburgh before he joined Store Design and went to live in Aberdour.
He met Susan and in 1986 they married and moved to Burntisland, where their children Catriona and Gavin were born in 1991 and 1993 respectively.
When he was made redundant in the late 1990s, Mr Marcol decided to dedicate himself to his art and become a full-time artist.
He was divorced in 2010. Mr Marcol had long-term heart problems. He is survived by Catriona, Gavin, brother Christopher and sisters Maria Christison and Anna Glass.
