Hotels in Dundee and Fife are cashing in this weekend with the return of Leuchars Airshow and Dundee Flower and Food Festival.
Tourists looking to attend the hugely popular events are struggling to get a room. Some hotels have been fully booked for months.
On Saturday, about 40,000 people are expected to descend to RAF Leuchars for a host of air demonstrations, including appearances of the Red Arrows, Typhoon and Sea King.
Meanwhile, at Camperdown Park in Dundee, more than 20,000 enthusiasts are expected at the weekend-long Dundee Flower and Food Festival, which boasts an appearance by Great British Bake Off judge Paul Hollywood.
Richard Ellison, the manager of Dundee’s Double Tree by Hilton formerly the Landmark Hotel said he was looking forward to a very busy weekend.
“It’s just a shame from our point of view that both events are on the same weekend,” he said.
“We could have sold each of our 92 rooms several times. Both the Flower and Food Festival and Leuchars Air Show are tremendous events for the area, bringing in thousands of tourists.
“We are also expecting a busy 2014 with the Ryder Cup and Commonwealth Games.”
As of Tuesday night, the Apex Hotel in Dundee only had a couple of rooms available at the 152-bedroom complex on Saturday night and was full on Friday.
A member of the hotel’s reservations team said: “The Flower and Food Show and Leuchars Airshow are two of the biggest attractions of the year and always lead to an upsurge in bookings.”
The Invercarse Hotel, Apex City Quay Hotel and the Holiday Inn Express in Dundee are all full on both nights.
There is a similar shortage of rooms in Fife, with the 209-room Fairmont St Andrews Hotel, the Old Course Hotel, Rufflets Country House and Macdonald Rusacks Hotel all at capacity.
Fairmont’s assistant reservations manager Suzanne Preston said: “The hotel was booking up so quickly that we put in place a three-night minimum stay. All our rooms are full and they have been for some time.”
VisitScotland regional director Jim Clarkson said the tourism attractions would not only benefit accommodation providers, but also boost restaurant trade.
He said: “Both the Flower and Food Festival and the Leuchars Air Show massively support the local tourism industry in both Dundee and Fife.
“This undoubtedly helps to support accommodation providers, but also the bar and restaurant trade as well as a host of other tourism related businesses.
“This is an excellent opportunity for the area to highlight and showcase the regions ability to host large scale events, all of which hugely benefit the local economy.”
