An emergency motion to debate the closure of a Dunfermline primary school has been turned down.
Councillor Brian Goodall, seconded by Councillor Neale Hanvey, submitted the motion about Pitcorthie Primary as a matter of urgency to the city of Dunfermline committee.
The motion asked the committee to state the “overwhelming majority of the information in the report supports the continued operation of the school, the nursery and the after school facility”.
Mr Goodall also asked the committee to agree that its view that the school should not be closed be conveyed to the council’s education scrutiny committee and executive committee.
However, committee chairwoman Helen Law said she would decline to debate the motion.
“It is not an emergency because it is an ongoing issue, and we do not have the officers here. Normally, we would have officers and reports.
“I feel this is a really important issue and it would be wrong to discuss it without all that information, so I am sorry but I have to decline it.”
Meanwhile, SNP MSP Annabelle Ewing has written to education secretary Michael Russell in an attempt to have the decision to close Tanshall Primary in Glenrothes called in for further examination by ministers.
She said: “It is clear to me, as it is to many folk in the area, that the consultation process that Fife Council carried out in the run-up to taking the decision to close Tanshall was severely flawed and the closure decision has been taken despite huge local objections.”
She said she backed the decision by parents and the local community to request that the decision be called in by the Scottish Government for ministerial consideration.
“I have written to the cabinet secretary for education, giving my backing to that call, and I hope Fife Council will change tack on their ill-advised and unwanted programme of schools closures,” she added.
