Lorraine Clark, an electrical engineer with Fife Council, is set to become the first female to take charge of SPFL matches and she could be the woman in the middle as early as 2018.
The 30-year-old from Thornton was the first female to officiate at Ibrox when she operated as an assistant referee for the Third Division match between Rangers and Berwick Rangers in 2013.
Now she is in pole position to make Scottish sporting history.
“She is a category two referee at present,” said John Fleming, the head of referee development at the SFA.
“Her next move would be to step up to category one development, which would allow her to drop into League Two and take charge of six games per season there.
“We’d then see how she fares at that level, just as we would with her male colleagues rather than automatically promote somebody to a higher level.
“So she would have a trial period over the course of a season.
“Lorraine is in that position now, having come through all the relevant categories.
“It will depend on her performances for the remainder of this season and in 2016/17, so it could be two or three years before that materialises.
“We’re hopeful that she will break into it but, as with anyone else, we’ll only put her in that position if she’s ready.
“Someone has to break the mould and Lorraine is currently handling matches in the East Juniors, and doing very well.”
