For more than a century it was the home of education in Burntisland, but now the town’s former primary school is being prepared for a new role as work gets under way to transform it into council housing.
Class was dismissed at the old Burntisland Primary School for the last time in 2014 when a new purpose-built campus was opened at Toll Park.
To make best use of the Ferguson Place site while retaining the historic buildings that made up the school, conversion work is now under way to renovate three vacant buildings into 25 affordable homes.
Councillor Judy Hamilton, Fife Council’s executive committee spokeswoman for housing and building services, said: “This is going to be a beautiful housing development when it’s completed.
“Some of these buildings date back almost 140 years and I’m so pleased that they are going to be given a new lease of life as very much needed affordable housing.
“A similar regeneration project in Cupar in recent years converted the site of the former Bell Baxter High School into affordable housing.
“I’m sure that this development will be as sympathetically done and as well received by the local community.”
As part of the stripping out process, several surprises have been unearthed along the way.
Survey work revealed the Cromwell building had been destroyed by fire in 1913 and that the building as it stands has a basement.
Discussions with members of the local community also alerted site staff to the possibility of a time capsule from the 1960s on the site.
