The people of Dalgety Bay are being treated with contempt by the Ministry of Defence, according to MP Gordon Brown.
In the Commons last night, the former Prime Minister said the ministry even now refused to admit it was the polluter.
As a result 2013 has been a year of delays and intransigence during which promises to produce a clean-up plan and to fund it have been “betrayed”.
He said he wanted justice for the residents who face the risk of the affected area being named the first radiation contaminated land in the UK.
He argued that delays mean none of the clean-up has yet been agreed.
“So the clean-up we expected to be agreed in the summer, commissioned in the autumn and completed by the winter has been delayed for yet another year,” said Mr Brown.
“As the December storms wash up more particles and coastal erosion continues apace, we face another winter of inactivity.”
He added that residents will become even angrier in the next few days when, “in a fanfare of publicity”, the MoD will announce it will break up its nuclear-powered submarines at Rosyth.
“We simply cannot have a situation where new waste is dumped in Fife but the MoD cannot give us assurances that they are cleaning up existing waste.”
