Sainsbury’s has ruled out plans to build a supermarket in Glenrothes but is exploring the possibility of opening smaller outlets in the town.
The chain has confirmed to The Courier that it is “actively looking” for possible sites in which to open its smaller “local” brand of stores.
The company has even appealed to members of the public to assist in its search for suitable locations as it bids to establish a presence in the town.
It comes after Sainsbury’s lost out in the right to build in the town centre the so-called “store wars” that will now see Tesco establish a giant outlet opposite the Kingdom Shopping Centre.
A spokesman told The Courier: “We can confirm that, following the decision taken a few years ago, we’re not presently pursing the option of a supermarket in the town.
“However, we’re actively looking for sites for new convenience stores.
“We believe they provide a valuable addition to the high street, attracting more shoppers to town and district centres.”
