TV presenter Ben Fogle helped pick up more than nine stones of rubbish from a Fife beach.
Cans, bottles, cotton buds and other items discarded on St Andrews’ famous West Sands were collected by the environmentalist and an army of volunteers during an event aimed at keeping beaches barefoot friendly.
The St Andrews beach was the last of 14 across the UK, and the only one in Scotland, to be tackled by the national Barefoot Wine Rescue Project since May, with rubbish weighing a whopping 1.8 tons collected overall, including 128 pounds in the Fife town.
An impressive 48 volunteers joined Ben and environmental charity Surfers Against Sewage for Monday’s coastal clean.
Ben, who also led last year’s Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project, said: “I’ve been involved in environmental issues for years and I’m passionate about the outdoors.
“A seemingly clean beach can actually have huge amounts of litter and rubbish just hidden beneath the surface.”
