A Fife man subjected his former partner to a terrifying ordeal by breaking into her home and hiding.

When the woman called the police after hearing noises upstairs, officers found George McKenna trying to conceal himself behind furniture. He then threatened to kill his former partner.

George McKenna, 26, of Lumphinnans Road, Lochgelly, admitted that having been granted bail on January 14 with the condition that he did not enter Union Street, Cowdenbeath, or contact or communicate with Amy Bowers, he breached this on March 5 by entering that street and breaking into her house, hiding a panic alarm and threatening her with violence.

He also admitted that having been apprehended by police, he repeatedly made threats of violence and threatened to kill his former partner.

McKenna further admitted assaulting a police officer by spitting on his face.

Depute fiscal Gary McMullan told Dunfermline Sheriff Court that Ms Bowers returned home at around 7pm with her daughter and her mother.

They saw that a glass panel on the back door had been smashed and Ms Bowers searched her home to see if anyone was there.

She could not find anyone but her mother saw training shoes which she believed belonged to McKenna. Later noises were heard from upstairs and again a search was carried out without finding anyone there.

However, Ms Bowers “remained in fear for her safety” believing someone was in the property and contacted the police, said the depute.

Officers arrived, carried out their own search of the house and found McKenna attempting to hide himself behind a chest of drawers in a bedroom.

When handcuffed he started shouting and swearing telling his former partner, “I’m going to batter you. I’m going to get you.”

He continued to threaten her saying, “When I get my f****** hands on you I’m going to kill you. When I get out I’m going to murder you.”

McKenna later told police, “I only broke in to see my daughter.”

Sheriff Craig McSherry jailed McKenna for 12 months.
