Under grey skies, a dash of red remembered the war dead.
Fife Provost Jim Leishman helped launch the first field of poppies to be staged in Dunfermline’s Garden for Heroes at a small service led by the Rev Robert Watt.
Wednesday’s event mirrors one run annually in Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh .
Volunteers from the Royal British Legion (Scotland) Dunfermline branch will man a pop-up poppy shop in the garden and an area beside the memorial stone has been allocated for the poppy installation.
City of Dunfermline area committee chairwoman Helen Law said: “The Garden for Heroes is a very special place for many people. It is fitting that it will be used by the British Legion Dunfermline branch so that anyone wishing to purchase a wooden cross has the opportunity to do so locally.”
Dunfermline club chairman Richard Dale said: “We’re delighted to bring this event to Dunfermline’s Garden for Heroes in memory of our brave servicemen and women, past and present.
“It’s hoped that we will raise a large sum of money for Poppy Scotland, who provide vital support for the armed forces community.”
Running until November 16, the event will enable members of the public to buy wooden crosses with poppies attached and then place them in the two-year-old garden.
A hut by the east gate will be staffed by British Legion volunteers from 10am to 3pm every day, with all proceeds going to Poppy Scotland.
