Opportunist thieves are targeting unsecured cars in two of Kirkcaldy’s most exclusive neighbourhoods.
Police in the town have urged residents of the Seafield and Raith Estate areas to ensure their vehicles are locked following a spate of incidents in recent weeks.
Mobile phones and other electronic items have been snatched from cars, with the criminals having gone through gloveboxes and storage spaces in their search for high-end goods.
Police have already traced people in connection with the thefts, but have urged householders to remain vigilant and take some simple precautions to protect their property.
Community PC Michael Daglish said: “We would like to reassure residents that we are committed to dealing with crimes of this nature robustly, ensuring anyone who commits this type of crime is dealt with appropriately.
“We would also like to thank residents for their continuing support and for the information they have already provided which has greatly assisted our local officers in the apprehension of those responsible.”
The warning comes just 24 hours after police in Glenrothes warned of criminals targeting unsecured properties in Markinch.
While housebreaking is relatively uncommon these days, unlocked cars and outbuildings are popular targets for opportunist thieves.
Officers are issuing general advice to residents in both the Seafield and Raith areas, warning people to ensure that their property is secure.
“Whenever owners are leaving their vehicles they should ensure all personal belongings have been removed or concealed from view, especially overnight and to check their vehicle is secure even when remote central locking is used.
“Always secure your vehicle, never leave it unattended or with the keys still in the ignition and don’t leave your keys anywhere they can be easily stolen leaving them by a house door or hallway is a gift to criminals.”
Police are asking anybody who witnesses any suspicious activity to contact them on 101 or to call the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
