The lack of a bus service to Fife’s flagship leisure centre has been described as “crazy”.
Councillor Bill Brown says he has been contacted by residents concerned at the lack of buses serving the Michael Woods Centre in Glenrothes.
The representative for Glenrothes West and Kinglassie said nearby buses could be rerouted to serve the £21 million centre, which opened to the public in July.
Tens of thousands of people have already passed through the centre’s doors but Mr Brown believes that it is absurd that driving, cycling and walking are the only realistic ways for local people to get there.
He said: “Quite a number of people have been concerned about it. There’s a £20-odd million sports centre but you have to drive there. It’s crazy.
“There are some buses that go to Leven and Dunfermline but the local buses stop at Pitteuchar Drive.
“It would be easy to reroute the buses that go through Pitteuchar. I think Stagecoach would do very well out of it and I’m sure that the sports centre would also welcome it.”
Discussions between the bus operator and Fife Council had taken place before the Michael Woods Centre opened, with the local authority keen to see at least one service rerouted.
Currently the subsidised 81 service stops at the Fife College campus next door but the route serves people from west Fife and not those living in Glenrothes itself.
The nearest bus stop with a current service within the town is on Pitteuchar Drive, a walk of almost half a mile.
A spokeswoman for Stagecoach in Fife said the company would be willing to reroute a service should there be sufficient demand.
She said: “The Michael Woods Sports and Leisure Centre is currently served by route 81, with routes 38 and 39 stopping nearby.
“The possibility of diverting route G7 to serve the centre has been suggested by Fife Council. We are monitoring the use of services in this area and will be happy to implement changes if there is sufficient demand.”
