Drivers flouting traffic restrictions during major roadworks in north-east Fife have been caught by police.
Five motorists were caught on a rural road near Guardbridge, where people warned that those ignoring one-way signs would cause an accident.
Officers issued fines and penalty points to offending drivers on the route known as the Pusk road, between the village and Balmullo, on Thursday.
The one-way system is in force as part of wider traffic management while pipes are laid for the St Andrews University between its green energy centre in Guardbridge and buildings at North Haugh.
Guardbridge’s Main Street is closed for eight weeks, creating a seven-mile diversion for travellers between St Andrews and Dundee.
Motorists had reported meeting vehicles being driven the wrong way on the Pusk road, and voiced fears that there will be a collision.
Police in north-east Fife confirmed that it was patrolling the route and warned that it would continue to monitor it.
A post on social network Twitter said: “Officers attended throughout the day and five drivers now three points worse off.
“Don’t risk it we’ll be back!”
Drivers had taken to social media to vent frustration at those disobeying the one-way signs and voice concern they would cause a smash.
