Bottled water supplies were being relied upon by hundreds of households and businesses in the Leuchars, Guardbridge and Balmullo areas today as engineers continued to work to resolve “complex” water problems which affected mains supplies for a third day.
The loss of water supply, which started causing problems on Monday night, was primarily affecting customers in Guardbridge, Leuchars and Balmullo.
Harry Naismith contacted The Courier to say the problem with water supplies in North East Fife had existed since 9.30pm on Monday. His mother resides in an old age home in Leuchars and they had been without a water supply since Monday night.
Mr Naismith said: “This has left them unable to flush toilets all day and severely restricted in terms of drinking water. I’m told the home management has been unable to obtain a satisfactory response from Fife Council as to when supplies will be re-installed.”
Leuchars, Balmullo and Guardbridge primary schools were closed on Tuesday as a result of the water problems. Fife Council confirmed the schools were back open today.
Scottish Water said this morning: “We are working to resolve an issue with our water network that is resulting in low pressure or loss of supply to customers in the KY16 area. The loss of supply is primarily affecting customers in Guardbridge, Leuchars and Balmullo.
“Scottish Water was carrying out work to install a new connection for a development in Leuchars.
“We experienced complications with the installation of the new connection, which has resulted in low pressure and no water to local homes and businesses.
“Work is underway to resolve this problem however the repair is complex.
“The repair work will be completed later this evening. In the meantime we are tankering water into the network to keep as many customers as possible in supply.
“Bottled water has been made available at three locations; Leuchars Primary School and Eden Brewery, Guardbridge and Balmullo Primary School, Balmullo.
“We apologise to local customers for this interruption to the water supply for homes and businesses in the KY16 area and we are directing all our available resources to restoring normal service as soon as possible.”
