Work to repair leaks at Dunfermline’s multi-million-pound swimming pool will not get under way until the end of the year.
Fife Council is in talks with contractor Barr Construction over defects at Carnegie Leisure Centre, which reopened in November 2011 after an £18 million refurbishment.
Last year, The Courier saw a report warning the leaks could lead to structural deterioration which would create “long-term maintenance and costs”.
Detailing the extent of the repair work required, the report said an area of floor had been left saturated but it was not known if the water had leaked from the pools or if the damage had been caused by rainwater during construction.
Water was also believed to be leaking from pipework near the pools.
Carnegie Leisure Centre has had its share of problems since reopening. Last September, a ceiling tile fell into the training pool, though nobody was in the pool at the time.
Work to repair the ceiling is set to go ahead soon.
Andy Maclellan, Fife Council’s sports partnership manager, said the leaks would not be repaired until much later this year.
He said: “We are progressing plans to carry out some repair works in the centre over the coming months.
“This includes replacing a small number of tiles in the wetside change and health village and some work to the ceiling of the dryside changing area.
“Discussions are ongoing with the contractor to address a number of outstanding issues which will require planned maintenance closures to the centre’s pools.
“These phased closures will not begin until late 2014 and dates are yet to be finalised.”
