Now they have finally finished painting the Forth Bridge, work is about to start on its sister road crossing.
There will be no delays for motorists, however the Forth Road Bridge has instead announced a landscape artist will play a key role in its 50th anniversary celebrations next year.
Kate Downie, from Edinburgh, has been appointed artist-in-residence by bridge operators the Forth Estuary Transport Authority and is no stranger to creating bridge-inspired art, in a career spanning a previous residency at the Forth Bridge and capturing the Yangtze River Bridge in ink on a visit to China.
As well as producing a commemorative print, Kate’s commission includes a series of art looking at the bridge from different aspects.
The project, forming part of the Forth Bridges Festival, will culminate in an exhibition at Hopetoun House, near South Queensferry.
