A planned sports hub for the north of Glenrothes would transform sporting provision in the area, a leading community figure has claimed.
Ron Page, chairman of North Glenrothes Community Council, said that the proposed cricket and football hub is exactly what is needed as fundraising for the £1 million project continues.
Led by Glenrothes Cricket Club, artist’s impressions of the complex have been released for the facility at Gilvenbank Park.
It is hoped sportscotland will contribute funding for the scheme, which has already been backed by Fife Council.
With the town’s main leisure centre located several miles away and without any direct public transport link, Mr Page said the planned sports hub would be a tremendous asset to communities in the north of the town.
“The North Glenrothes Community Council has given its full support to the plans,” he told The Courier.
“Fundraising is under way at the moment, which is quite a substantial effort.
“There are no buses to the Michael Woods Centre, which is at the other end of the town, so this would be good news.
“We’ve always wanted something like the Lomond Centre in the north of the town and from what I gather there will be a pavilion, changing facilities, meeting space and a caf, which would be great for this area.”
A crowdfunding initiative has been launched to help contribute towards the cost of the project.
Kenny Crichton, chairman of Glenrothes Cricket Club, said: “It’s quite a challenge, but we’re very positive about achieving our target.”
