The recent deadly toll on a main road through Fife has strengthened calls for urgent safety action.
The spate of incidents on the A92 near Freuchie have added to a catalogue of evidence collected by community leaders who are calling on Transport Scotland to improve the safety of the trunk road.
There were four accidents in as many days last week one of them fatal.
Three separate accidents occurred within hours and metres of one another last Wednesday, with one collision, involving a car and a tractor, claiming the life of 73-year-old Catherine Armitt.
Two further collisions later that day saw motorists escape with just minor injuries.
A fourth incident occurred in the early hours of February 21, with a cyclist described as being in a “critical but stable” condition after being struck by a silver Vauxhall Corsa.
Members of the community are particularly concerned about two crossroads that link Freuchie to the busy trunk road, where last week’s accidents occurred.
Parents are so concerned, they are driving their children just 400 metres to school to prevent them from having to cross at the black spot.
Patrick Laughlin, the secretary of Freuchie Community Council, said: “Freuchie is divided by the A92. There must be 30 or 40 houses on one side and the people living there can feel like they’re cut off.
“They have to drive their kids to school because they don’t feel safe letting their children cross the A92.”
“The community council has been making a case for years that the A92 is no longer fit for purpose at this locus.
“We conducted our own survey last year and shared our findings with government agencies.
“It was quite thorough and it found that 25% of all vehicles using the road are HGVs. A lot of the traffic travels very quickly and it is that mixture of fast and slow traffic that makes accidents inevitable,” he said.
Because of its status as a trunk road, the A92 is the responsibility of Transport Scotland, not Fife Council.
The body has been lobbied by the community council to meet local representatives to discuss safety concerns, although no date has yet been confirmed for this.
