Work to transfer Leuchars from the RAF to the army is progressing well, with the latter ready to play a prominent role in the community, senior local authority figures have claimed.
At a meeting of the community operational work group, representatives from the army and RAF joined Fife Council, NHS Fife, Police Scotland, community groups and elected members to plan for the potential changes during the transition of the base.
Over the coming months, an army transition team will be working alongside the RAF to ensure there continues to be good engagement with the local community.
Head of adult services with Fife Council, Roseanne Fearon said: “We’re considering issues including how many places will be needed for children at local primary and secondary schools, the potential impact on health and wellbeing services, social work, voluntary sector and housing in the area.
“Discussions on all these issues is progressing very positively and we anticipate moving forward with plans to deliver a well-coordinated transition process.”
An army HQ spokesman said: “We have established strong links with Fife Council and other local statutory and community groups, and we are extremely pleased to have the opportunity to contribute to all engagement within the local community.”
The transition to an army base is due to be completed by 2015.
