The recently-appointed head teacher of Tayport Primary School says she is confident “speedy improvement” can be achieved at the school.

The comment by Jane Holmes follows the latest inspection report by Education Scotland, which highlights a number of strengths and areas for improvement needed at the school.

The inspectors highlighted the school’s nursery as a key strength, where children learn and achieve very well. The children’s progress in writing in the primary was also noted as a key strength.

Mrs Holmes herself was praised for the impact of her leadership during the short time she had been in the school.

Three areas for improvement were agreed greater pace in curricular development, ensuring children receive a breadth of experience and further develop their skills and support for learning to meet pupils’ needs.

Mrs Holmes said: “We know how proud our children are of our school and our nursery. The inspectors’ report confirms that.

“It is also heartening to have the work of the staff in the nursery commented on so positively. We have been concentrating on improving writing since my arrival and the report indicates we have made good progress there.

“However, when I came here I knew much work needed to be undertaken to make the school as good as it can be. The report identifies areas where speedy improvement is required.

“My teaching and support colleagues know there is much to be done but with the support of parents and the wider community, we are all confident we can improve those areas identified quickly and effectively, for the sake of the children.

“I will be asking Education Scotland to continue to work closely with us all as we secure improvements over the next weeks and months, rather than wait for a return visit in 18 months’ time. The Tayport community deserves nothing less, and we are fully committed to this work.”

Councillor Bryan Poole, Fife Council’s spokesperson for education, said: “The report on Tayport Primary School, while praising aspects of provision, identifies the need for improvement.

“I am confident the new head teacher will work at pace to secure such improvements to the benefit of all parents and pupils.

“I would wish to see improvements in place well in advance of the planned return date identified by Education Scotland.”
