Alex Rowley, the leader of Fife Council, is to stand for the Labour Party in the Cowdenbeath by-election.
The surprise selection was confirmed following a meeting of local party members, with Mr Rowley understood to have won the nomination ahead of Inverkeithing and Dalgety Bay councillor Gavin Yates.
He will now defend the seat for Labour in the ballot, scheduled to take place on January 23, following the death last month of previous MSP Helen Eadie.
Speaking last night Mr Rowley said: “I am delighted to have the support of Labour members to represent this area in the Cowdenbeath by-election.
“This by-election takes place in the saddest of circumstances Helen Eadie was a fantastic local MSP who was well respected by the people of this area and she will be sadly missed.
“I hope the people of this area will see in me someone who can be a strong voice for the communities of Fife just like Helen.”
Mr Rowley’s selection comes as he steers Fife Council through a series of major financial cuts.
His continuing role in the council is uncertain should he win the by-election, although by standing he is likely to be attacked by opposition groups who will question his commitment to his current role.
