Life sentence for man who beat Kirkcaldy pensioner to death
ByThe Courier Reporter
A man who battered a 90-year-old woman to death in her Fife home after he became angry at his mobile phone has been jailed for life.
Thomas Brogan, 46, attacked widow Georgina Barnett at her home in Ramsay Road, Kirkcaldy, despite pleas from the pensioner for him to stop.
He had pleaded guilty to the murder and was sentenced this morning at the High Court in Edinburgh.
Lord Pentland ordered that Brogan serves 18 years before he can be considered for parole.
The attack happened on June 25 and Mrs Barnett died five days later.
Police Scotland welcomed the sentence.
Detective Inspector Gary Boyd, who led the investigation, said: “Only Thomas Brogan knows why he carried out this unprovoked and violent attack on his helpless victim, who was a much loved member of the local community.”
