A major chain has not yelled “cut” on plans to bring a cinema to Kirkcaldy.
Vue Cinemas has told The Courier that the lights have not gone down on its proposals to return the silver screen to the Lang Toun, despite reports to the contrary.
Though the company confirmed that there had been no new developments since the summer, Vue did reiterate that it was examining a location in Kirkcaldy, believed to be that of the former swimming pool.
In a statement, a spokeswoman for the company said: “Vue Entertainment continually look for potential new site options and we are aware of the site development at Kirkcaldy.
“The development is still in the early planning stages and so no final decisions have yet been made.”
The Courier revealed earlier this year that a deal between Vue and Fife Council was close after a series of senior level meetings took place.
While confirming in June that no deal had been concluded, Vue did reiterate its desire to open in Kirkcaldy with plans for a site, believed to be that of the former swimming pool, said to have been in the early stages.
Kirkcaldy has been without a picture house since December 2000 making it one of Scotland’s largest towns not to have such an attraction.
Instead locals have to travel to Glenrothes or Dunfermline, despite a report from the British Film Institute, published earlier this year, claiming a town like Kirkcaldy could sustain three screens.
A new cinema has also been widely regarded as a potential driver for regeneration of the town centre for many years.
While Vue is not ruling out establishing a cinema in Kirkcaldy, Fife Council’s head of economy and planning, Robin Presswood, was unable to say much more when contacted by The Courier yesterday.
He said: “Unfortunately, we are not in a position to comment on individual negotiations or companies.
“We’re keen to secure new investment in Kirkcaldy town centre, including new leisure facilities, and are continuing to work with owners of land and property to facilitate new investment and development.”
