The incident, involving a passenger service, happened between Markinch and Kirkcaldy shortly after 8pm. There was major disruption to rail services throughout the east coast of Scotland, with the stretch of line closed for almost three hours. Services between Dundee and Edinburgh were diverted via Perth while replacement buses were put in place at stations in Fife. The identity of the deceased is not yet known.
