Two Scottish icons were brought together for the 15th World Scotch Pie Championships in Dunfermline.
Among the judges in this year’s pastry contest was Bay City Rollers star Les McKeown.
Having inspired a generation to wear tartan, he was more than happy to help promote the Scottish delicacy.
“We’ve all been tasting different pastries, sausage rolls and bridies,” he said. “My department was the Scotch pie, the cream of the crop.
“It’s something I’ve done all my life since I started to promote tartan all over the world.
“Any time I get a chance to promote something Scottish, I jump at it. I’m really proud to be doing something for Scotland.”Photo gallery: World Scotch Pie ChampionshipsThis year, there was a record turnout with 100 butchers and bakers firms from across the country entering a total of 543 products.
The popularity of the event has continued to rise since the inaugural event in 2000.
Last year saw the creation of the football pie award and this year, for the first time, a category for a sweet apple pie was launched.
Far from being a half-baked affair, judging the competition is serious business and is done anonymously.
Mr McKeown was among 50 judges who assessed the products on criteria including appearance, texture and taste at Carnegie Conference Centre. Many of the judges were retired butchers and bakers.
“I would say in my experience the quality was quite high,” Mr McKeown said. “These competitions aim to drive up quality in general”.
He added: “I go to the gym in the morning so I’ll be working it off.”
The winners will be announced during a ceremony in January.
