Gordon Brown urges voters not to reject union because of ‘reactionary policies’

Gordon Brown has urged voters in the independence referendum not to reject the Union because of the Coalition’s “reactionary policies”.
Giving a speech in Kirkcaldy at the weekend, Mr Brown said unpopular Westminster policies such as the spare room subsidy, also known as the bedroom tax, could be used to back the argument for Scottish independence.
But he argued that the key to a fairer Britain was the ability to pool resources and promote equality in areas such as social security and healthcare.
The MP for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath was at the Old Kirk for the Fife Talks series of lectures. His speech centred on his belief that pensioners would lose out if the public voted yes in the SNP’s referendum on independence, set to take place in a year’s time.
“The union lives and dies by the way we pool and share our resources,” he said.
