VIDEO: Mr Glenrothes still running rings around the young ones at 77

What time did you get out of bed this morning? 8 o’clock? Maybe you treated yourself to a long lie?

What about breakfast? Did you manage to stick to porridge and brown toast, or did a bacon roll grab your fancy instead?

Well, if that is the case then prepare to feel very guilty because all of this is alien to Joe McCafferty or Mr Glenrothes as he is also known.

He woke up at 5.30am and by 6am he was already out on his morning run.

After a low-fat breakfast he was off to the leisure centre and later he will be coaching the youngsters of Glenrothes Strollers FC.

It’s no surprise that Mr McCafferty is fit but what is astonishing is his age. He’s 77.

“I get up, do my stretches and run more or less 10k,” he said.

“I’ll come back and do 45 minutes of stretches, have breakfast and a wee walk to the sports centre, go to the hall if there’s nobody there and have a wee kickabout.

“After that I’ll go home, have a walk and then maybe I’ll have training to take. You could call me a fitness fanatic. My muscles are always loose and if somebody asked me for a kickabout then I could do it right now.”

A builder’s labourer before he retired, Mr McCafferty is not only well-known in Glenrothes but highly regarded within Fife football circles.

After moving from Glasgow in 1960, he helped establish Glenrothes Strollers FC and has coached generations of players.

Former Scotland international Colin Cameron and current Forfar Athletic striker Chris Templeman are just two of the players who learned their craft under Joe.

After 40 years of involvement with the club, he says he has no intention of hanging up his boots and is taking coaching sessions almost every day of the week.

“I feel great all of the time. I’m never in a mood and never have a bad temper,” he said. “It’s hard to explain but I feel like I’m buzzing every day.”He beat me by a long stretchThere is no doubting Joe is one fit guy regardless of his age, writes Jonathan Watson.

As an athletic 30-year-old I thought a man of 77 would have trouble keeping up with me, but his healthy lifestyle and obsession with fitness has kept him seemingly forever young.

Meeting him at the home of Glenrothes Strollers, we stretch for a while before breaking out a couple of balls in Overstenton Park.

Indulging in a few skills challenges, it is clear Joe has great technique and an instinctive first touch the sign of someone who never goes long without kicking a ball.

Joe has remarkably small feet, like legendary Romanian Gheorghe Hagi, and despite giving a good account of myself, my cumbersome size 11s are no match for him in ourpassing challenge.

His regime of stretches famous in local football is telling when we compete in a heading challenge, with him moving freely over bumpy ground.

Again, a solid effort is not enough to match Joe, who soundly beats me.

A forfeit run around the pitch follows, but I feel no shame to have been beaten by the man known across Fife as “Mr Glenrothes”.

Locally, he is likened to Sir Alex Ferguson.I’m clearly more like David Moyes.A day in the life5:30am It’s up with the crow for Joe as he prepares himself for a gruelling early run with some stretches.

6am Trainers laced-up and ready to go, Joe hits the streets of Glenrothes for a 10k run.

8am Back home and, after stretches, Joe has a healthy breakfast before heading to the Michael Woods Sports Centre.Post by Mark Chalmers.10am Depending on who else is there, Joe will have a kickabout in the sports hall and practise his ball skills.

If the hall is booked, he takes to the balcony and offers encouragement to the badminton players below.

When Raith Rovers use the outdoor pitches, he joins the squad to shoot the breeze with the staff and cast his expert eye over the players’ performances.

2pm After lunch, Joe takes a gentle walk.

However, sometimes he admits to racing between lampposts in a bid to keep his speed up.

7pm Preparations are made for training with the Strollers.

Joe says seldom a day goes by when he is not involved in working with the club’s youngsters.
