Friends and family of a 21-year-old man found dead in Glenrothes Town Park have hosted a football tournament in his honour.

Former Beath High School pupil Daniel Turner died as a result of injuries he sustained during an alleged disturbance in the park in October.

Daniel’s death shocked his friends in Cowdenbeath, who described him as a “friendly” and “quiet” man.

Daniel’s close pal Joe Schiavone, 22, said: “He was a brilliant guy. You won’t find a bad word said about him. He was a quiet guy who was never in trouble and was really friendly. We were best pals.

“It was a real shock when I heard what had happened. I heard when I was at work. I was halfway through a lunch break when I was told he was killed. I couldn’t believe it.”

Joe and fellow friend Ali Condie decided to organise a football tournament at Beath High School’s all-weather pitch on Sunday in memory of their friend.

Daniel was an avid football fan and followed Celtic and his local team, Cowdenbeath.

Joe said: “When we were at high school all we did was play football. Daniel was the first one always wanting to play. Myself and Ali thought a football event would be suitable and if it was successful we could do it every year.

“Around 30 people turned up for the event. All his good friends were there, his little brother played and his mum and dad turned up. Everybody who turned up had a good time.

“It was extra special seeing his little brother, Bradley, winning the cup for the year and remembering Daniel.

“We hope to make it in summer time next year when there is better weather. We are definitely going to make it a yearly event and will look to put money in a pot and donate the cash to charity.”

After the tournament a raffle was held at Cowdenbeath’s Silver Birch pub. Celtic FC donated four stadium tour passes, Cowdenbeath FC donated a signed shirt, and Amazon and local shops donated other prizes.

Joe added: “Daniel’s family were really pleased and really grateful that everybody turned up. We raised just over £300 and are letting the family decide how that is spent.”

A 25-year-old man, Ewan Dow, has appeared before a sheriff at Kirkcaldy accused of murdering Daniel on October 29.

Dow previously made no plea or declaration when faced with two charges of threatening and abusive behaviour, one of assault and one of murder.

He made no plea or declaration, the case was fully committed and the accused was remanded in custody.
