Fife independence supporters set to march in capital

Campaigners will be heading to Edinburgh on Saturday to join what they hope will be thousands of like-minded people in the annual march and rally for Scottish independence.

Hundreds of Fifers are planning to attend the event, which will begin in High Street in Edinburgh at 11am and is organised by an independent collective that is not aligned to any one political party.

The aim is to bring together the biggest gathering of supporters of Scottish independence ever.

Last year’s march in Edinburgh attracted 10,000 people but organisers of this year’s event are hoping for upwards of 50,000.

The Yes Kirkcaldy group is planning to hold its own pre-march warm-up before the main event. Those travelling to Edinburgh by train are invited to meet in Kirkcaldy’s Town Square at 9.30am, where a piper will lead the procession up to Kirkcaldy train station to catch the 9.59am train to Edinburgh.

Yes campaigner Marie Penman is hoping for a huge crowd. She said: “Last year’s march was great fun, especially as the sun shone all day.

“I want to see thousands more people turn out this year, as we begin the final countdown to the referendum next September.

“Anyone from Kirkcaldy who’s interested in tagging along should meet us in the Town Square. If you aren’t sure how to vote next year or if you have any questions you’d like answered, this is the perfect opportunity for you.”

The march in Edinburgh will end on Calton Hill, where there will be guest speakers and bands playing, as well as food and drink, various stalls, children’s entertainment and more.

For those who would rather travel by bus, the organisers have arranged for coaches to leave from every major town in Scotland, with fares starting at £4. Tickets for the buses and further details on the day’s events can be found at www.independencerally.com.
