A Fife man woke up to discover his home had been broken into, his BMW car had been stolen and a £3,000 watch and £1,500 in cash were also missing.
Steven Morrison, 27, a prisoner in Edinburgh, admitted that between May 6 and 7 he broke into a house on Muir Road, Lochgelly, stole a sum of money, a watch, two sets of car keys, bank cards and a mobile phone.
He also admitted opening one of the cars, stealing a bank card and then stealing the other car.
Morrison further admitted that on May 9 at Fort Kinnaird Retail Park, Edinburgh, he attempted to drive a car while unfit to do so through drink or drugs, failing to provide a blood specimen, driving while disqualified and without insurance.
Depute fiscal Ron Hay said the homeowner had woken up in the morning to find property had been moved in his kitchen.
The man then noticed that a second car, a white BMW, was lying open and a bank card had been stolen from it.
On May 9 police were contacted about a suspected case of drink-driving at Fort Kinnaird Retail Park. When police spoke to Morrison, the BMW was blocking the entrance to a McDonald’s restaurant. Asked if he was the owner of the car, Morrison replied: “I found it.”
Officers initially believed he was under the influence of alcohol but a breath test proved negative. However, the police medical adviser’s opinion was he was not fit to drive because he had taken substances.
The court heard Morrison had first taken heroin aged 16 and developed a habit before he was 20.
Sheriff Charles Macnair jailed him for 28 months and disqualified him from driving for 40 months.
