The arrival of a much-needed new car park at Leuchars Railway Station is expected by the autumn.
Two years after Fife Council pledged cash to create more spaces at the busy station, it was indicated work was likely to start in April.
However, the time frame came with a warning there could be a further delay due to the need for cables to be shifted out of the way by Scottish Power.
The car park at Leuchars is usually full early in the morning, with some commuters driving across the bridge from Dundee and Angus for cheaper fares south and to escape city parking charges.
As a result, passengers rushing for trains often park illegally and hundreds of fines have been issued at the station.
They also park on narrow Station Road, where there are concerns about congestion and road safety.
News that the long-awaited £600,000 extension, which will have 336 spaces, was approaching was welcomed by north-east Fife councillors but they were told that the start date could slip depending on discussions with the utility firm over the cabling.
Tay Bridgehead councillor Tim Brett said: “It is very disappointing that there is this further delay in getting work started on the new car park at Leuchars railway station, particularly when the council agreed this with Scottish Power in early December .
“It’s now nearly four months later and we are still waiting to hear when Scottish Power will start this work.”
Scottish Power, however, said it was approached in January and was now waiting for necessary paperwork from the council before it can start the work.
The council said it was processing a request from the company received in February to access land where cables will be diverted.
Service manager Mark Dewar said: “The Leuchars railway station car park project, as with all construction projects, has several phases and stages and we work with a number of suppliers and organisations to deliver a successful completion.
“We are working with Scottish Power to progress the project and the plan is to have the new car park in place by the autumn of 2016.”
A daily parking charge of £1 is to be levied at the car park.
The service charge to cover maintenance and any additional works required was agreed when Fife Council agreed to an allocation of £350,000 for the project.
The other £255,000 was provided by Network Rail.
It is also proposed to introduce a no waiting at any time restriction on the north side of Station Road.
