Jim Leishman led the way on this year’s Dander for Mary as participants set off to raise more cash.

The sixth Dander for Mary is taking place between St Andrews and South Queensferry over the traditional route.

The walking party will cover more than 80 miles of the Fife Coastal Path on the walk, which will be completed on Sunday.

The walkers stayed at the Craws Nest in Anstruther last night, will be at the Caledonian Hotel in Leven tonight and the Cedar Inn and Woodside Hotel in Aberdour tomorrow.

Foundation secretary Ele Segerius joked: “All of our hotels are always very sympathetic to us as we make a lot of noise.

“The participants walk hard and party hard. They celebrate finishing the walk and then celebrate being able to get up the next morning and start it all over again.”

The fundraisers will be joined by Sheamus and Trish Gormally who have made the trip from their home in Ireland to join in the event.

Ele said: “They are friends of mine and they said they’d like to come and take part.

“They got time off work to come across and I hope it’s everything we’ve always told them it was.

“We also have people who are walking for the sixth time and have never missed an event.

“There is a great atmosphere and a great camaraderie on the walks and you can imagine with Jim at the helm that you get a lot of laughs as well.”

It is hoped the walk will raise thousands for the Mary Leishman Foundation.

To date, the charity has raised £670,000 for many different charities, promoting its aims of encouraging potential and easing distress.

Ele added: “When you think that when we first started in 2009 we said we would reach for the stars and try and raise £100,000, it’s been a fantastic effort.”
