Over the last few weeks thousands of touching and poignant tributes have been created to mark the marriage of Prince William and his new bride Catherine Middleton.
However, there have surely been none sweeter than the one displayed in the window of a St Andrews shop.
Portraits of the happy couple have become a common sight, but when one composed entirely of jelly beans appeared in the window of Burns sweet shop it caused quite a stir.
More than 11,000 sweets were used to create the intricate picture, which has left locals licking their lips.
The people of St Andrews share a special affinity with William and Kate as the pair famously met while studying in the town. Given their voracious appetite for all things related to the royal wedding, an edible portrait was perhaps a natural step.
Artist Malcolm West made the mouth-watering masterpiece, which weighs in at more than 25 kilos and measures 1.5m by 1.2m.
He told The Courier it took more five weeks to create the portrait-but insisted it was well worth it.
“I naturally became completely involved with the picture as it emerged and there was something very special about being able to create something to mark such a great love story,” he said.
“They are a beautiful couple and their wedding was a huge occasion both for themselves and the whole country. Putting every single jelly belly in the right place is quite painstaking work but I am pleased with the results I do hope they like it.”
The portrait is now going on a “royal tour” around Britain, and The Courier understands inquiries have even been received from Windsor Castle.
Heather Smart, manager at Burns, admitted the response had been “huge.”
“It has been an absolutely massive talking point,” she said. “Everybody has been fascinated by it-we were delighted to display it in our window for local people to enjoy.”
