A housebuilder preparing plans for an area of parkland in St Andrews has suggested 30 homes could be constructed there.
BDW Trading, a subsidiary of Barratt Development, has lodged a notice with Fife Council stating its intention to seek planning consent forresidential development of the New Park playing field in St Andrews.
Neighbours in the Canongate are worried about what is proposed for the land, which forms part of the picturesque Lade Braes walk and was part of the New Park School before it closed down some years ago.
Planning consultants for BDW Trading have told the council 30 houses could be accommodated on the playing field, which has become a wildflower meadow.
Some open space is also envisaged as part of the development.
The area in question includes land behind Priory Gardens and between the street and Newmill Gardens.
He said the proposals are for residential use of the former playing field and open space on land under BDW Trading’s control at Lade Braes, offering greater community access.
A public meeting and exhibition is to be held next month to present the proposals to the public and gather feedback.
Views expressed at the exhibition would be taken into consideration before submission of the planning application.
A submission made by BDW to the council as part of the FIFEplan consultation process states the site is suitable for 30 houses.
Concerned neighbours have demanded the playing fields are left untouched, pointing out they are designated open space in the council’s development plan.
St Andrews Community Council chairman Howard Greenwell previously said the playing fields were an integral part of the Lade Braes walk and no developer should be allowed to build houses on protected open space.
The exhibition is to be held on January 29.
Further details will be published nearer the time.
