A taste of Rio at Fife International Festival

The colourful carnival procession.
The colourful carnival procession.

More than 10,000 people flocked to Kirkcaldy for Fife’s answer to the Rio carnival.

Performers from across the globe dressed in colourful costumes captivated crowds in the town’s High Street and Town Square.

Some 17 international groups from countries as diverse as Martinique, Poland, Hungary, Portugal and Trinidad and Tobago were joined by around 50 local participants for the first Fife International Festival.

And with temperatures close to those of the Brazilian city, it proved to be a sizzling afternoon of music, dancing, circus and street theatre.

Organisers ON At Fife were delighted with the reception.Photo gallery: Fife International FestivalChief executive officer Frank Chinn said: “It was an excellent day, it couldn’t have gone any better. We were stunned at how many people came to the town for it.

“The principal benefit has been to establish Kirkcaldy as a town that can host events of national and international importance.

“The performers had a fantastic time, too. They were very appreciative of the audiences who came out to see them.”

Spectacular outfits were shown off during a parade through the town centre and a variety of performances were given on stages.

The event, run in conjunction with Jazz Scotland, was supported by business development group Kirkcaldy4All and Fife Council.
