Something for the weekend Fife pub plans to open barber shop in bar

A Burntisland pub hopes to give a whole new meaning to hair of the dog by opening a barber shop in the bar.

The Jubilee Tavern in Aberdour Road has had its licence varied so it can offer haircuts.

Proprietor David Henderson said he got the idea from a combined pub and barber shop in the Wirral, which has become hugely popular.

He said: “If you go to a barber shop there are six guys waiting on a Saturday morning, sitting there reading football magazines. Instead they could be having a half pint.

“But it wouldn’t be so much alcohol, we’d be serving coffee and making it more cafe continental. Children would be welcome.”

Mr Henderson, who also has plans to create a parcel depot in the pub, had to convince Fife Licensing Board that a barber shop would not cause any health and safety issues after concerns were raised by police about sharp implements being left lying around.

He said: “Equipment would solely be the responsibility of the barber.

“They would bring their own equipment with them and this would be taken off the premises when they were not there.

“After speaking to health and hygiene, they didn’t seem to have an issue with anything concerning floating hair ending up in someone’s food. We would have a temporary screen across the area of the barbers, which would be six feet.

“Both of these are just ideas at the moment. We’re trying to offer the community something different. Parcels are obviously just another idea to add to that. We don’t have a secure area for keeping parcels, so this would be at a later date.”
