Dame Judi Dench is to receive an honorary degree from Stirling University.

The Oscar-winner will collect the Doctor of the University award later this month in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the arts and also for her vital work in highlighting dementia.

Dame Judi is no stranger to the university, as a key supporter of the Dementia Services Development Centre.

She officially opened the university’s Iris Murdoch building a decade ago, giving a huge boost to the worldwide work of the centre which has now been at the university for a quarter of a century.

Centre director Professor June Andrews said: “Her moving Bafta-winning performance depicting a woman with dementia in the classic film Iris is still one of our best resources in helping everyone understand the value of every person with this condition, and the evidence base for supporting them.”

The university will also confer an honorary degree on Scottish wildlife film-maker Gordon Buchanan.

Currently starring in new BBC series Wild Cameramen at Work, narrated by Sir David Attenborough, he received the award of Doctor of the University in recognition of his outstanding services to conservation and wildlife film-making.

He said: “My job is deeply rewarding on a personal level, so it feels incredibly generous to be recognised for my contribution to conservation and film-making by such an esteemed institution.”
