An eight-year-old boy was killed and two other people were hurt in Monday’s horrific crash on the A92 near Kirkcaldy, it has emerged.
The tragic news comes after emergency services were in attendance for several hours at the scene of the accident between the Redhouse and Bankhead roundabouts.
Fears a young boy had been killed have now been realised, as police confirmed that an eight-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
The 36-year-old female driver of the Ford Focus involved is understood to be fighting for her life in hospital, while a nine-year-old boy also suffered serious facial injuries.
A male passenger within the car, also aged 36, was said to be unhurt, while the driver of the other vehicle involved in the smash an Iveco lorry was also uninjured.
The crash, which took place in lane one of the northbound carriageway around 150 yards beyond the Redhouse Roundabout, was reported to the emergency services at around 3pm.
There were long delays as the evening rush hour began, and disruption lasted well into the night.
Police diverted traffic via Thornton and motorists were advised to avoid the area if possible.
Anyone with information that can assist police with this ongoing investigation is asked to come forward.
Inspector Brenda Sinclair from the Road Policing Unit said: “Tragically this collision has resulted in the death of a young boy, while the driver and another child also sustained very serious injuries.
“We are still trying to establish exactly what happened and I would ask any motorists who were on the A92 on Monday afternoon and who witnessed this incident to contact police immediately.
“Similarly, anyone who with any further information relevant to this inquiry should also get in touch.”
It is understood the family involved were not from Fife and may have been on holiday.
