It may only have a population of around 3,000 people, but one woman’s attempt to raise a few laughs has put Cardenden firmly on the global map.
Caroline Burnett took to social media over the weekend to advertise a dress for sale for £10 and claimed that she needed the cash quickly so her and her friends could go out for a few drinks in nearby Kirkcaldy.
But even though Caroline, 23, swiftly revealed that her online auction was an innocent joke, the power of social media has propelled Caroline’s dress and the Fife town she calls home to worldwide fame.
The Facebook post was picked up by internet site The LAD Bible, which is home to funny videos and parodies aimed at men aged 16-30, and has now been viewed more than 67,000 times and shared almost 5,400 times.
Indeed, the site itself has more than 10.3 million Facebook ‘likes’, and boasts an impressive 1.31 million followers on Twitter.
The LAD Bible’s retweet of Caroline’s post simply said: “She can’t be serious” and it turns out they were spot on.
“I did it as a bit of a joke but that’s my banter to be honest,” she said.
“I was sitting with my friend Ashley (Jarrett) and we both just decided to put it up for a bit banter.
“I can’t believe how far it’s gone though it’s a bit embarrassing.
“The dress was never for sale and I only got it out as my friend is going to take it on holiday to Turkey.
“She’s going to wear it with pride now after all this!”
Her original post has attracted thousands of comments and, as is often the case with social media, not all of them have been complimentary.
But thankfully Caroline has managed to see the funny side: “It was all a wind-up after a few drinks, so some people just need to get a sense of humour.”
