A Glenrothes man has admitted carrying out a brutal murder in a park in the town.
Ewan Dow stabbed Daniel Turner 171 times before leaving his body there on October 18.
Police Scotland have welcomed Dow’s conviction, at the High Court in Glasgow on Friday.
Officers said the murder “was unprecedented in the level of violence displayed.”
Former Beath High School pupil Mr Turner was only 21.
Detective Inspector Scott Cunningham, who led the investigation, said: “This was a mindless, unprovoked and brutal attack on a 21-year-old man. Ewan Dow’s frenzied and violent actions are unimaginable and clearly shows the behaviour of a person out of control.
“I welcome this plea which means the family do not need to go through the ordeal of a trial, having suffered enough heartache.
“My thoughts are with Daniel’s family and I pay tribute to them for their dignity and strength shown throughout this tragedy and I sincerely hope this brings some form of closure to them.”
Dow’s crime brings a mandatory life sentence but Lord Turnbull deferred sentence until January 29 for reports before he decides how long Dow must serve before he can be considered for parole.
After Mr Turner’s death, his family paid tribute.
They said: “Daniel was a much-loved son, brother, grandson, family member and friend to many. He lived life to the full. He was a friendly and happy individual. He will be sorely missed by all that knew him.”
