Muggles muck in for quidditch cup magic at St Andrews
ByCheryl Peebles
Broomsticks were absent but muggles spread some magic as the first Quidditch Scottish Cup was played on Sunday.
Fans of J K Rowling’s Harry Potter were treated to some Hogwarts action with a real life version of the sport played by the wizard.
St Andrews University sides, the St Andrews Snidgets and St Andrews Skrewts, faced competition from Edinburgh University’s Holyrood Hippogriffs and Stirling University’s Stirling Dragons.
In the books, quidditch players fly broomsticks and the game involves balls called a quaffle, bludgers and the golden snitch.
Quidditch for humans is described as rugby sevens combined with dodgeball, handball and tag and the snitch is a person with a tennis ball.
The event was also part of the university’s Charities Campaign Rag Week.
