The closure of a Glenrothes primary school will remove the “heart of the community”, according to a local councillor.
Bill Brown, representative for Glenrothes West and Kinglassie, has stated his determination to keep Tanshall Primary School open after it was earmarked for closure as part of a drive to save money by Fife Council.
It was one of seven schools across Fife identified for possible closure as the local authority battles to bridge a £70 million funding gap.
However, the plans have caused uproar from parents in the Tanshall area, whose children would instead be relocated to Caskieberran and Southwood primary schools.
Mr Brown told The Courier: “The local community are quite rightly ‘up in arms’ about this proposal and feel that this will take away the heart of the community.
“Councillor Peter Grant and I from the SNP will be working with the local community to keep Tanshall Primary School open.”
Tanshall was identified by the local authority for possible closure for running under capacity.
It currently has a roll of 177 pupils, although it has the capacity to hold 317.
Councillor Bryan Poole, Fife Council’s spokesperson for education and learning, said: “Our ultimate aim is to have the right number of buildings to support high quality education.
“This will mean that more money can be spent in supporting the education of all our young people rather than on the maintenance of under-utilised school buildings that, in a few cases, are in a less than satisfactory condition,” Councillor Poole said.
